Abu Dhabi Guide

Abu Dhabi travel notes for a seamless journey

Facts: Abu Dhabi, literally meaning ‘father of gazelle’, is both an emirate and a city of the United Arab Emirates. The city is the capital and the largest in the UAE. The city of Abu Dhabi lies on a T-shaped island joined to the mainland by several bridges. A group of about 200 islands fall under Abu Dhabi territory, including Sir Bani Yas Island, Al Futaisi and Saadiyat. The emirate has an extensive coastline stretching over 600km and is home to over 2,000 parks and gardens.

People: The UAE is a closely-knit and homogenous society whose ethnicity is Arab and whose value system is drawn from Islam and traditional Arab customs. However, due to long traditions of trade and travel, the UAE is a young and vibrant nation and is very tolerant towards other cultures. In harmony with old Arabian traditions and customs, UAE nationals are hospitable and welcoming to visitors.

Landscape: Abu Dhabi’s land surface measures approximately 67,500 square kilometres, which is equivalent to about 80% of the UAE’s total land area. About 93% of the total land area of the emirate is covered by desert and arid land, which makes Abu Dhabi one of the driest regions on earth. The city, however, is also home to pockets of stunning lush greenery such as the protected Eastern Mangroves District and, as one of the few hotels in Abu Dhabi City located in this area, Eastern Mangroves Hotel & Spa by Anantara is set against a naturally scenic backdrop.

Weather: Located along the line of the Tropic of Cancer, Abu Dhabi is marked by a very hot and humid climate. During the months of April to September the average temperature rises above 40 degrees celsius, with occasional sandstorms. During the period of October to March, the city enjoys a very pleasant climate making it one of the best periods in which to travel to Abu Dhabi. January and February are the coolest months of the year, while rainfall is almost non-existent in the city.

Tips for travellers

Citizens from the UK and GCC who travel to Abu Dhabi receive a three-month visa on arrival at the airport, free of charge. Citizens from most western nations including Australia, New Zealand, United States of America and a range of European countries receive a 30-day visa on arrival, free of charge. Visitors who do not fall within these categories must apply for a visa at their nearest embassy prior to departure.
Please be aware that visa requirements are subject to change. Always check with the relevant embassy prior to travelling to avoid any unnecessary obstacles.
You are requested to dress conservatively in public, particularly during religious holiday periods. In hotels and beach clubs western swimwear is acceptable at the pool, however is not welcomed in public areas.
When shopping, please note that the UAE is a tax-free country and price tags indicate the final price on anything.
Overly public displays of affection are not encouraged, although a married couple is permitted to hold hands.
Please do not carry alcoholic beverages on public transportation. In the UAE, alcohol is served in licensed outlets and consumed within these premises.
